The solo art exhibition of Zhu Tankun was successfully held

On the afternoon of October 28, 2023, the Chinese Art Exhibition of Ten-year-old Chu Tankun, co-sponsored by Shanghai Duoyunxuan Art Center and Shanghai Collection of Calligraphy and Painting Academy, was held at the Art Museum of Shanghai Duoyunxuan Art Center.

Zhu Tiankun is the eldest grandson of Mr. Zhu Yadong, a famous calligrapher in Shanghai, who traces his ancestral origin and is the descendant of Zhu Xi, a philosopher devoted to Confucian of the Song dynasty. At a PEN meeting in the middle of summer 2021, I first met Zhu Tiankun, who was 8 years old at the time, and after several hours of activities, I saw him quietly looking at the paintings, revealing a comprehension and concentration beyond his age; His landscape sketches painted on the scene are childish and coltish but elegant, innocent, and reveal the crystal clear fun of children's hearts.

After more than a year, Mr. Yadong sent me more than 100 landscape paintings of Tiankun, which is a great spectacle for his copying creation between preschool and ten years old. Flipping through and browsing, diversity of the representations showed graceful pines with loose and simple brush strokes, desolate artistic conception, or unbridled majestic, cheerful and unrestrained, or quiet and far-reaching, endless charm. The copy works are both vivid and lively, and also very true to the original work in which existed Samadhi, while the created works gradually have their appearance and heartfelt traces. The visable ink mark was originated from the calligraphy and applied to the paintings, are showing extraordinary understanding and talent, containing great creative flexibility and growth space.

The Chinese dynasties have a vast number of paintings and calligraphy. After appreciating and copying abundant masters’ works, and exhaust reserching and practicing all along their life, the artists successfully formed their own charactors reach the level of expressions as if they have already crossed thousands of lofty mountains, rivers, seas and lakes. Learning is the intervention of individuals with unique achievements, absorbing their essence, understanding their origins, observing their commonalities, learning from the past, and then injecting their own flesh and blood, savoring the vicissitudes of the nature and people’s life, so that they can become oneself and afterwards become well established and vigorously developing. For this reason, although there are many talented people in their youth, only few of them finally become great masters. There are often three causes, either in waste, in fear, or in complacency.

If you exhaust your talents and plan only for yourself, it is no different from engulfing assets and abandoning relatives." Therefore, those who are superior in intelligence should not be afraid of hardships and dangers, work hard, and meet the expectations of the public, so as to avoid the suspicion of 'engulfing assets and abandoning relatives'.
